The Whisky Bot Profile Picture
The Whisky Bot
Balanced, sweet and smoky. The nose is rich and complex with notes of toffee, vanilla, and black pepper. The palate is dominated by creamy flavors of chocolate, toffee, and cinnamon, with a subtle hint of smokiness and a spicy kick. The finish is long and lingering, with a smoky sweetness that leaves a warm and pleasant sensation in the mouth.

Product Description

An Oa is named after the Mull of Oa in the south west of Islay, which offers the Kildaton coast (where Ardbeg distillery is situated) some protection from the worst the Atlantic has to offer! As such, An Oa is intended to show a more approachable side to Ardbeg single malt that's as rounded as the Oa peninsula, without losing the characteristic distillery style. In the summer of 2017 this became the first addition to Ardbeg's core range in over a decade. Maturation took place in a combination of casks including Pedro Ximénez, charred virgin oak and ex-bourbon, which were all brought together to marry in Dr. Bill Lumsden's new 'Gathering Vat'!

Tasting Notes

Notes: Overall, Ardbeg An Oa is a well-balanced and complex Islay whisky, with a unique mix of sweet and smoky flavors that make it a great choice for both novice and experienced whisky drinkers. The combination of different cask types (Pedro Ximénez, charred virgin oak, and ex-bourbon) adds depth and richness to the flavor profile, while the non-chill filtering process preserves the natural oils and aromas of the whisky. Whether enjoyed neat or with a splash of water, Ardbeg An Oa is a delicious and rewarding dram that captures the essence of Islay's rugged and untamed beauty.

Production Methods

Ardbeg An Oa is a single malt Scotch whisky that is made using traditional production methods. The whisky is aged in a combination of new and old charred oak casks, Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and virgin oak casks. The marriage of these different casks creates a complex and well-balanced flavor profile that Ardbeg is known for. The whisky is distilled using malted barley that is dried over peat smoke, giving it the distinctive smoky and peaty character that is characteristic of Islay whiskies. The spirit is then aged in oak casks for several years, allowing it to develop its unique flavor and aroma. Overall, the production methods used to create Ardbeg An Oa result in a whisky that is rich, complex, and full of character.

Serving Suggestions

Ardbeg An Oa is a whisky that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. It is suggested that you pour it neat and let it rest for a few minutes to allow the flavors to open up. Alternatively, it can be enjoyed with a few drops of water, which can help to release more aromas and flavors. Some also recommend trying it in a whisky cocktail, such as an Old Fashioned or Manhattan, for a unique and flavorful twist on a classic drink. Regardless of how you choose to enjoy it, Ardbeg An Oa is a versatile and complex whisky that is sure to please any whisky lover.

About The Brand: Ardbeg

The tiny, secluded Scottish Isle of Islay has been the production site for Ardbeg for more than 200 years. Some people take the twisting road from Port Ellen to Ardbeg. Others heed their instincts, their fate, or the counsel of a trusted friend. Whisky experts have described Ardbeg as 'as near to perfection as makes no difference.' This provides as evidence that Ardbeg genuinely merits its stellar reputation. The whiskey is revered all around the world. Six unique Ardbeg expressions have taken home important awards in the last 10 years, including World Whisky of the Year, Scotch Whisky of the Year, and World's Best Single Malt. The industry's most phenolic malt, soft, clean water from our own water source, together with commitment and enthusiasm Some would argue that the chemistry involved in making Ardbeg is a result of both the production method and the individuals involved. And we concur.
