Penderyn, a Welsh distillery has secured a multimillion-pound deal to distribute its whisky across China. This lucrative deal will single handedly make Asia Penderyn’s biggest export market. The deal was signed with Hong Kong-based Port Union and its subsidiary on the Chinese mainland, Yantai Hongyu Liquor Co. This deal is critical in increasing the recognition of Welsh whisky and allowing it to stand equally next to its Scottish and Irish neighbors in terms of whisky output.
This momentous news comes right after the first direct container sets sail from Scotland to China.
Penderyn is located in Brecon Beacons, Wales, and is the first commercially available whisky made in Wales since the 19th century. In 2021 a new distillery opened in Llandudno also known as the Lloyd Street Distillery. In addition a third distillery is already underway with plans to open a third distillery in Swansea as part of a £1 billion (US$1.2bn) transformation program by the local council. Penderyn already sells internationally to Taiwan, Australia, France and USA.
Penderyn has most recently released its 10th bottling in the Icons of Wales series called Yma O Hyd in celebration of Wales reaching the World Cup in Qatar.
Penderyn has shown an amazing resilience and determination as it continues to grow despite challenging economic times, logistic delays, and growing inflation. They are on track to reach £20 million in 2022 turnover.
