Surgeons Quarter, the commercial division of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd), is strengthening its historical ties by partnering with a craft distillery to produce a special whisky.
Crafted by the experts at Summerhall Distillery in Edinburgh, the whisky is part of Surgeons Quarter's 1505 collection, which already features a distinctive gin and a craft ale. This unique creation is the result of a meticulous blend of premium whiskies that have been matured exclusively in 100% American oak ex-bourbon casks.
The RCSEd has a rich distilling heritage dating back to 1505 when the Barbers and Surgeons of Edinburgh successfully petitioned the Town Council for a Seal of Cause, granting them certain privileges. The collaboration between Surgeons Quarter and the craft distillery pays homage to this esteemed history.
Among the privileges granted to the Barbers and Surgeons of Edinburgh was the exclusive right to distil aqua vitae, also known as the "water of life." This term eventually became synonymous with alcoholic beverages, especially whisky. Now, over five centuries later, Scotland's national drink will once again take centre stage, paying tribute to this historic legacy.
“Our 1505 gin and ale range is extremely popular but we felt the line-up was missing something, so we are delighted to partner with our near neighbours at Summerhall to produce our own 1505 whisky. It is fitting that with our parent organisation’s long history and the connection to distilling dating back hundreds of years that we can now present our own brand of whisky to visitors and guests. As a health organisation we encourage alcohol awareness. We are certain 1505 Whisky will become a favoured dram for many and urge those who enjoy it to drink responsibility and in moderation.” ~ Scott Mitchell, Managing Director
The complete 1505 collection, including the remarkable 1505 Whisky, is available at all Surgeons Quarter establishments.
