The Isle of Harris Distillery which is celebrating its eighth birthday on September 23, 2023, proudly announces the release of its inaugural whisky, "The Hearach."
This whisky pays homage to the native people of Harris. The official launch will be accompanied by a live streamed event and a festive celebration for the local community.
The following day, The Hearach Single Malt will be released for sale at the distillery shop and online store, followed by its availability in select UK retailers and worldwide distribution starting in October.
In a tribute to the clandestine stills of the past, the islanders proudly declare that "The Hearach" is the first legal whisky from the Isle of Harris, crafted entirely by the local men and women of the distillery, from distillation to maturation, marrying, and bottling.
Drawing inspiration from its rugged Outer Hebridean surroundings, The Hearach embodies complexity and character, promising a captivating spirit.
The exquisite bottle design, created by renowned agency Stranger & Stranger, will remain a closely guarded secret until the official release in September.
Reflecting on the journey, Simon Erlanger, Managing Director of the distillery, remarked, "Fifteen years ago, Burr Bakewell founded the Isle of Harris Distillery Company. We always believed that the whisky would be ready when the time was right, so it is truly a momentous occasion to announce the launch date, coinciding with our distillery's eighth anniversary."
He added, "Just as we celebrated with a grand ceilidh back then, this time we'll raise a historic dram to toast the island's achievements."
Ron MacEachran, Executive Chairman of the company, expressed his delight at the launch of The Hearach, a remarkable achievement eight years after the distillery's inception. He acknowledged the contributions of various individuals, including the designers, builders, and the supportive community from the island and beyond.
MacEachran also expressed gratitude to the investors who shared a long-term vision of revitalization centered around creating a distinctive whisky. He emphasized the dedication and passion of the exceptional team who brought the distillery to life, persevering through challenges to ensure the highest standards of product and service quality, now exemplified in The Hearach single malt.
In a special gathering, the first seven bottles were personally filled by the original seven founding staff, commemorating their significant role in the distillery's journey.
