Compass Box, the renowned Scotch whisky producer, has introduced Metropolis, the latest addition to its Extinct Blends Quartet series. This limited edition release is the third of four bottlings in the collection, which pays homage to long-forgotten blends, drawing inspiration from the vanished distilleries and their distinctive flavors.
"Extinct distilleries can be resurrected, but the blends from the past cannot be replicated on a grand scale. These formulas capture unique moments in time, shaped by relationships, ideas, and individuals," the brand explained.
With each expression in this series, Compass Box embraces the legacy of these vanished characters and flavors, reinterpreting four distinct styles of blended Scotch whisky by using some of their most treasured whisky parcels.
Metropolis, a celebration of bustling cities both past and present, draws inspiration from a recently extinct blended Scotch with a rich history. It's characterized as charming, refined, and brimming with vitality, aiming to encapsulate the excitement and opulence of urban life.

The whisky's aging in Sherry casks imparts a luscious dried fruit essence, complemented by a creamy and zesty grain whisky foundation. Additionally, delicate notes of hot metal and shipyard smoke from a vintage malt whisky contribute to its unique profile.
Metropolis joins Ultramarine and Delos in the Extinct Blends Quartet series. Ultramarine, the inaugural release, featured mature malts from Caol Ila and Glendullan distilleries, aged grains from Cameronbridge and Girvan distilleries, and a blend of pre-existing stocks. Delos, the second blend, incorporated older stocks and malt whiskies from Glen Elgin, Imperial, and Miltonduff distilleries, aged in American oak barrels.
Metropolis, bottled at 49% ABV, will be available for purchase starting September 20th through www.compassboxwhisky.com, priced at an RRP of £260 (US$327).
