Glengoyne distillery is a Scottish whisky distillery located in Dumgoyne near Killearn, Stirling, and is situated just a few miles away from the stunning Loch Lomond. The distillery is asking for volunteers to help protect the wetlands for a day in exchange for a free bottle of whisky and a distillery tour.
The single malt distiller is encouraging whiskey drinkers to commit to volunteering one day with Glengoyne's longtime charity partner, the UK's Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), which protects wetlands.
Volunteers will get a complimentary bottle of Glengoyne 15-year-old whiskey in exchange for their time, as well as an invitation to the distillery for a comprehensive tour.
“The environment is at the heart of everything we do, and our 11-year partnership with WWT is testament to this. In launching the 15 Year Old, we wanted to give back to the beautiful ecosystem that allows us to produce our single malt. So, by donating just one day of your time to WWT, whisky fans will be able to help protect carbon-capturing wetlands, aid the conservation of migratory geese, and take home a bottle of this excellent new dram.” ~ Katy Muggeridge, brand director at Ian Macleod Distillers, owner of Glengoyne
Glengoyne will choose volunteers who will work at one of WWT's UK locations to maintain wetlands. The goal is to construct biodiverse wetland habitats. The volunteers will be coppicing trees, eradicating invasive plant species, and clearing vegetation.
In 2011, Glengoyne became the first distillery in Scotland to use a wetlands facility for all of its liquid waste. In addition to helping the facility cut trash by 25%, the relocation gave 14,500 plants and animals a place to live.
“Glengoyne constantly show such vocal support for the importance of wetlands, and thanks to this support we’ve been able to show how much these green spaces can do for people and the planet in our fight against climate change. We’re proud to call them our partners and are excited to turn whisky enthusiasts into wetland enthusiasts as well.” ~ Georgie Cox, corporate partnerships manager at the WWT
Whiskey lovers may join the project by going to the Glengoyne website, where they can also buy the 15-year-old.
Glengoyne 15 Year Old costs £90 (US$107) for a 700ml bottle and has a 43% ABV.
The whisky, which was released in October 2022, was aged in a mix of Sherry and Bourbon barrels.
The aromas of malt flour, fresh hay, dried fruits, citrus, and rosehip are followed by flavors of apple, cinnamon, vanilla, and tropical fruit. Dry with a hint of spice and lingering oak, the finish is.
About Glengoyne Distillery
Glengoyne distillery is known for producing single malt Scotch whisky, which is matured in the Highland region of Scotland.
Founded in 1833, the distillery was initially named Burnfoot distillery before being renamed to Glenguin in 1861. Later in 1905, it was renamed to its current name, Glengoyne. The distillery has undergone several changes in ownership over the years but has remained in operation for nearly 200 years.
One of the things that sets Glengoyne apart from other distilleries is the fact that it doesn't use peat to dry its malted barley, instead using only warm air. This gives the whisky a unique flavor profile, with less smokiness than some other Scottish whiskies.
Glengoyne produces a range of single malt Scotch whiskies, including the 10-year-old, 12-year-old, 15-year-old, 18-year-old, 21-year-old, and 25-year-old. They also offer various limited-edition bottlings and cask-strength expressions.
Visitors can take tours of the distillery, learn about the production process, and even participate in tastings. The distillery also has a shop where visitors can purchase bottles of Glengoyne whisky, as well as other merchandise. Overall, Glengoyne distillery is a must-visit for any whisky enthusiast or tourist in Scotland.
