About Mackmyra

In 1998, eight friends had the notion to create a Swedish whisky in a cabin in the mountains. The group had a custom of gathering in Sälen once a year to keep in touch after finishing their engineering studies together. This time, quite by luck, everyone had a bottle of whiskey with them. One of them questioned why there wasn't Swedish malt whisky throughout dinner and, if it could be done, why no one had done it before. The query went ignored, but soon the idea to forge on and create the first Swedish malt whiskey emerged. Mackmyra Svensk Whisky was founded a year later, in 1999. From the beginning, Mackmyra was entirely committed to producing a whiskey that was distinctly Swedish. Local barley, spring water, and Swedish oak were used to start the expedition. Then, by a stroke of good fortune, Mackmyra created the 30-litre barrel, which, because of its smaller size, enables the whiskey to age more intensely. Even the smoky formula is unique to Sweden; it is malted and smoked by hand using juniper twigs and locally harvested peat. The whisky is then matured in the former Bod's Mine, which is 50 meters below, a short distance from the distillery. With the same curiosity and experimental fervor as in 1999, Mackmyra still manufactures whiskey today, but it does so in the ground-breaking Gravity Distillery, which uses gravity to help with production and is intended to significantly cut carbon emissions. Mackmyra uses its own techniques to develop cutting-edge goods utilizing Swedish ingredients, guided by historical knowledge of whiskey manufacture.
