The blended Canadian whiskey brand Crown Royal, commonly known as Seagram's Crown Royal, was developed by Seagram and has been owned by Diageo since 2000. While the mixing and bottling of the whisky are done in a facility in Amherstburg, Ontario, the production of Crown Royal is done in Gimli, Manitoba. For the 1939 royal tour of Canada, Samuel Bronfman launched the whiskey. Before being initially made available on worldwide markets in the 1960s, the whisky was only offered in Canada. In the US, it is the most popular brand of Canadian whiskey. As a homage to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's historic 1939 royal visit to Canada—the first by a reigning monarch—Samuel Bronfman, president of Seagram, developed Crown Royal in 1939. When it was first launched to the United States in the 1960s, it was only offered in Canada until 1964.
