“It’s always been our mission at Compass Box to create compelling whiskies, even if it means breaking moulds – or creating new ones. Thanks to the early collaboration with Jonathan Goldstein, we created a quintessential peated whisky that has gone on to become one of our core expressions, still beloved by whisky drinkers two decades later and one that we’re proud to be celebrating with this cask strength limited edition.” ~ John Glaser, founder of Compass Box
The Peat Monster Cask Strength's increased alcohol concentration distinguishes it from the regular Peat Monster expression. It is bottled at cask strength, which means that after maturity it is not diluted with water but rather is bottled directly from the barrel. The Peat Monster Cask Strength's alcohol by volume (ABV) might vary somewhat between batches, although it is typically between 55 and 60%. This particular bottling is at a cask strength of 56.7% ABV.
The Peat Monster Cask Strength is a blend of a few whiskies. It is part Williamson aged in refill American oak hogsheads and part Caol Ila blended Islay malt, aged in refill American oak hogsheads, American oak Bourbon barrels, and refill puncheons, and last but not least part Highland malt blend, aged in custom French oak barrels with a heavy toast. Also, Compass Box honoured American coopers by giving the whisky one final finish to honour The Peat Monster's US heritage. Half of the whiskey has been aged for three to four months in barrels made of American white oak.
This blend boasts flavours of charred oak, sweet vanilla, and peat smoke, The Peat Monster Cask Strength is renowned for its deep and smokey flavour profile. As it has a greater alcohol concentration and a more strong and complex flavour profile, whiskey lovers frequently choose it.
The monster is shown on the bottle's label in "Dali-esque" fashion among skyscrapers, burning subway steam grates, and a view of Central Park by renowned American artist Mark Burckhardt.
9,126 bottles of the most recent release will be sold for MSRP £105 (US$127.50) apiece.
About Compass Box
Former Johnnie Walker marketing director John Glaser established Compass Box, a small-batch Scotch whisky mixing business, in 2000. Although having its headquarters in London, England, the business purchases and mixes whiskies from all around Scotland.
The way Compass Box approaches whisky blending is distinctive in that they place a high value on openness and creativity. On their packaging, which is unusual in the business, they list the ages and origins of the whiskies used in each mix. To develop distinctive taste profiles, they also experiment with various barrel types and ageing procedures.
The following are a some of Compass Box's most well-known blends:
- The Spice Tree is a combination of malt whiskies that has been given a spice and vanilla flavour by being matured in fresh French oak barrels.
- The Peat Monster is a highly peated mix with earthy and smoky undertones.
- Hedonism is a blended grain whisky with a sweet and creamy flavour that is matured in first-fill American oak barrels.
Compass Box is well-known among whiskey connoisseurs for its cutting-edge approach and premium blends and has received multiple honours for their whiskies.
