A single malt whisky distillery is going to be built in Campbeltown, according to a planning application made by Glasgow-based Brave New Spirits.
The proposal submitted to Argyll & Bute Council outlines the intention to construct a new distillery at the former RAF Machrihanish airbase in Campbeltown, Scotland. This upcoming establishment, named Witchburn Distillery, aims to produce a range of single malt whiskies, including unpeated, lightly peated, and heavily peated expressions. Adam Hochul and Alexander Springensguth, co-owners of Brave New Spirits, expressed their enthusiasm in a joint statement, emphasising their commitment to becoming an integral part of the community and contributing to the renowned global reputation of Campbeltown whisky. They further added that the chosen location for their inaugural still house could not be more ideal.
“The distillery is a great addition to our existing portfolio of internationally recognised brands of Scotch whisky, but also an opportunity to give back to the outstanding community of Scottish whisky distilleries.” ~ Adam Hochul and Alexander Springensguth, co-owners of Brave New Spirits
Pending approval, the proposed site would accommodate a range of essential distillery equipment, including a five-tonne mash tun and 16 wash backs, each boasting a generous capacity of 30,000 litres. Additionally, the facility would house two wash stills capable of holding 16,000 litres each, as well as two spirit stills with a maximum capacity of 7,000 litres.
Embracing sustainable practices, the net-zero distillery aims to produce an impressive annual volume of two million litres of alcohol, relying solely on green renewable energy sources. To maximise energy efficiency, the founders intend to operate the distillery round the clock, effectively recycling excess heat and energy.
When it comes to Witchburn's wood policy, the majority of the new make spirit will find its home in various cask types, including American Bourbon barrels, oloroso Sherry casks, select Tawny and Ruby Port barriques, and organic Bordeaux wine barriques. Maturation will occur onsite, benefiting from the close proximity to the sea.
Guiding the distillery's production process will be Andrew Nairn, an experienced master distiller who previously served as the distillery manager of Glenkinchie, Strathmill, and Borders Distillery. His expertise will undoubtedly contribute to the exceptional quality and craftsmanship of Witchburn's whiskies.
With the objective of generating employment opportunities, the distillery envisions the creation of around 30 new jobs encompassing production, warehousing, and distribution. Additionally, they have future plans to establish a visitor centre, further contributing to the local economy and tourism industry in the upcoming years.
Commencement of production is contingent upon obtaining planning approval, with the aim of initiating operations by the end of the fourth quarter in 2024.
