A decision from Pernod Ricard to continue exporting its brands to Russia has caused an outrage from whisky consumers even with last week's similar criticism from Absolut Vodka customers.
The French firm confirmed this decision extends to its entire portfolio, including brands such as Jameson, Redbreast, Beefeater gin and Olmeca Tequila. It has however suspended exports of Absolut Vodka to Russia after consumer backlash in Sweden.
“In full compliance with all international sanctions, the decision to resume our exports to Russia was taken once our pre-existing stocks (imported pre-war) were depleted and applied to our portfolio of brands. It is important to note that both the number of brands and the quantity sold of each have been strongly reduced across the portfolio, including the removal of Absolut as you have seen. We continue to monitor the situation closely with the protection of our local teams in the region of paramount importance.” ~ A spokesperson for Pernod Ricard
Social media users have expressed outrage over the decision and are asking for a boycott of all Pernod Ricard goods.
Pernod Ricard did not disclose whether this decision will be changed in response to the most recent public outrage as it did with Absolut Vodka. However in a statement, the corporation did point out that Absolut's presence in the nation is negligible enough not to have an impact on the profitability of the Russian business.
The ongoing boycott of Pernod Ricard highlights the growing pressure on companies to be more accountable for their actions and to take a stand on social and political issues. As the conflict in Ukraine continues, it remains to be seen how Pernod Ricard will respond to the boycott and whether it will be able to maintain its position in the global market.
According to the Irish Whiskey Association, combined sales of Irish whiskey in Russia and Ukraine amounted for 7% of total sales in 2021, having a "likely negative impact" on worldwide sales in 2022. Prior to 2019, Russia had 7.3 million bottles, making it the second-largest market for the category.
