Based on the little information available online here is a look at what I could find out about the inaugural release from the Holyrood Distillery, called Arrival.
The first release, which draws inspiration from Edinburgh's extensive brewing and distilling history, combines sweet and spice being incredibly smooth for such a young whisky. On the taste, there is sweetness, a noticeable spice, digestive biscuits, a juicy raisin, followed by vanilla and rum-like undertones.
The custom bottle, which draws inspiration from Edinburgh's rich brewing history, avoids whiskey clichés and goes toward something a little more regional, placing the already iconic Holyrood hourglass front and center. While the strong writing and unusual form of the label are unmistakably futuristic in their design, they pay homage to a once-vibrant glassworks at Baileyfield, not too far from the distillery, with their characteristic beer bottle profile and brown glass.
It appears it will be bottled at 46.1 ABV though some of the images released may indicate closer to 48% but the images are not the highest quality.
FROM 6TH OCTOBER - You can buy it online or in person via Holyrood Distillery webstore or Distillery Shop (limited quantities availble).
About Holyrood Distillery
Situated in the heart of Edinburgh's Southside, Holyrood Distillery emerged onto the Scotch whisky scene in 2019, its inception marked by a resounding commitment to redefining the very essence of whisky-making. Within the walls of a historic building, once a part of Edinburgh's Innocent Railway, Holyrood embarked on a journey characterized by progression, innovation, and unceasing experimentation.
For Holyrood, whisky is not merely a beverage; it is an ever-evolving narrative, a journey that unfolds with each passing day. Drawing inspiration from the world of craft brewing, Holyrood Distillery sets out to continuously craft and release whiskies that are not bound by the traditional conventions of age statements or a standardized flavor profile. Instead, they dare to traverse uncharted territories, challenge established norms, and redefine the boundaries of what Scotch whisky can be.
At the core of Holyrood's exceptional distilling venture is its young and dynamic team of distillers. Unlike many venerable distilleries across Scotland, this spirited group of artisans carries with them a curiosity and thirst for knowledge that knows no bounds. With no rigid traditions or historical constraints dictating their approach to whisky-making, they relish the freedom to embark on each day as a fresh adventure. What they create is in a constant state of metamorphosis, a testament to their unbridled creativity and dedication.
Holyrood Distillery proudly identifies itself as a product of Edinburgh, a city steeped in history yet resolutely focused on the future. It is in this vibrant metropolis that the past, present, and future converge seamlessly. The city's brewing legacy, though hidden in plain sight, serves as a wellspring of inspiration for Holyrood. They delve into forgotten recipes, malts, and fermentation techniques, breathing new life into these ancient treasures to shape the future of Scotch whisky. In doing so, they not only pay homage to Edinburgh's rich brewing heritage but also position the city prominently on the Scotch Whisky making map once again.
A pivotal ethos that guides Holyrood's whisky-making philosophy is encapsulated in a luminous yellow neon sign that hangs in their distiller's lab: "Test, Learn, Improve, Repeat." This simple yet profound mantra forms the foundation of their liquid thinking. It embodies an iterative approach that compels them to explore, learn, and evolve continually. Whether their creative endeavors lead to the production of gin, rum, or whisky, the whisky mindset of Holyrood remains unwavering, driving their ceaseless quest to craft liquids that captivate and inspire.
Holyrood Distillery's inaugural release represents the dawn of an exciting new era in single malt production. Each release in their portfolio stands distinct from the previous, a testament to their innovative approach to traditional Scotch whisky craftsmanship. These whiskies, born from the city of Edinburgh, are more than just spirits in a bottle; they are an embodiment of Edinburgh's pride, firmly rooted in the city's heritage and brought to life by its contemporary, forward-thinking culture.
In the words of Holyrood Distillery, "Our goal is nothing less than to be amongst the finest spirit makers in the world." Their journey is one of collective effort, filled with laughter and hard work. Their values serve as a guiding light, shaping how they treat themselves, each other, and the environment around them. With each drop of liquid they create, Holyrood Distillery redefines what it means to be a custodian of the Scotch whisky legacy, forging a path toward greatness in the world of spirits.
