Japanese whiskey is produced at the Miyagikyo distillery. It is close to Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture's administrative center in Japan's Tohoku region. The distillery was established in 1969 and is owned by Nikka Whisky Distilling. It was the second distillery created by Nikka Whisky after the company's Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido and was initially called as 'Sendai distillery.'
