Royal Lochnagar is one of the relatively lesser-known distilleries. There is not too much written in the way of reviews and history. One of the reasons for the anonymity is Royal Lochnagar has a limited production capacity, as a significant portion of its output is dedicated to Johnnie Walker blends. Therefore, the distillery offers only three regular expressions, and it doesn't enjoy a substantial independent bottling presence, making such finds scarce. Despite these factors, Royal Lochnagar certainly has a unique charm!
In 1988, to honor the historic occasion when Queen Victoria visited the Lochnagar distillery in September 1848 and granted it a Royal Warrant, the Royal Lochnagar distillery created a special expression known as the "Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve." This exclusive release comprises only a limited number of individually numbered bottles, carefully drawn from specially reserved casks. The refined and revered flavor profile of this Highland single malt Scotch whisky is likely to captivate connoisseurs of today, just as it did back then.
Tasting Notes for Royal Lochnagar Selected Reserve
NOSE:
The aroma is complex with notes of dried fruits and cakes, melded with that sweet sherry cask influence. Deep toffee notes reminiscent of treacle toffee emerge, complemented by a subtle but fresh balance of turpentine. When water is added, a grassiness, along with faint traces of coffee grounds, and toffee. The overall impression is sweet and profound, and further dilution brings a delicate suggestion of soft rubber and a subtle wisp of dry sherry.

The finish is sharp and exquisitely balanced.

About The Brand: Royal Lochnagar
The history and origin of Royal Lochnagar distillery can be traced back to 1826 when it was originally founded under the name "New Lochnagar" by James Robertson. The distillery was built on the banks of the River Dee, near the eastern slopes of the mountain Lochnagar in the Scottish Highlands. The location provided access to pure water from the river and an abundance of high-quality barley, essential ingredients for producing whisky.
In 1845, the distillery was acquired by John Begg, who expanded and improved the operations. It was during this period that the name was changed to "Lochnagar" to align with the name of the nearby mountain. The distillery's reputation for producing quality whisky grew, attracting the attention of royalty.
In September 1848, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the Lochnagar distillery during their stay at Balmoral Castle. They were impressed by the whisky's taste and craftsmanship and granted the distillery a Royal Warrant, allowing it to use the prefix "Royal" in its name. Following this Royal Warrant, the distillery became known as "Royal Lochnagar."
Having the Royal Warrant bestowed upon it elevated Royal Lochnagar's status and brought attention to its exceptional whisky, further enhancing its reputation in the whisky industry.
Over the years, Royal Lochnagar faced several challenges, including financial difficulties and temporary closures. In the late 19th century, it was taken over by a consortium of whisky merchants, and in the early 20th century, it was acquired by John Dewar & Sons. Later, in 1925, the distillery became a part of Distillers Company Limited (DCL), which eventually evolved into Diageo, one of the world's leading spirits companies.
Today, Royal Lochnagar continues to produce single malt Scotch whisky, appreciated for its smooth and well-balanced character. Although it may not be as widely recognized as some other distilleries, its historical significance, association with the Royal Family, and quality whisky offerings have earned it a devoted following among whisky enthusiasts.
